School hosts the MidSouth Accounting Research Consortium
MSU’s School of Accountancy hosted the fourth MidSouth Accounting Research Consortium on April 1, 2005. The consortium is made up of Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi, and University of Memphis.

The consortium research focused on causes, consequences, and remedies associated with financial distress. When profits are failing, firms search for infusions of capital and strategies for recovery, while auditors face tough decisions about the sort of opinion to provide on the financial statements. The consequences can be severe; keynote speaker, Jan Barton from Emory University, provided 50 years of data illustrating that market participants like credit rating agencies and stock exchange boards are slow to forgive these episodes of distress. The lively meeting provided a review of lessons learned about financial distress and provided a fresh direction for new research.
