The Adkerson School of Accountancy offers an internship program to offer students "real world" accounting experience during their college careers. The internships are typically completed during the spring semester of students' senior year. Students receive academic credit for the ten-week internship that begins in January and ends after spring break. Students can elect to return to campus and enroll in two eight-week "minicourses" during the remainder of the semester, thus earning 9 hours of college credit while gaining valuable work experience. Students and their employers are free to modify the timing and length of their internships. Some companies offer summer and fall internships. An internship can also be extended for a full semester. The benefits of an internship to students is tremendous. First, students can expect to earn between $4,000 and $8,000 during the ten-week internship. Students gain experience that can not be duplicated in the classroom. Through an internship, students can see if a company's philosophy and direction matches their career goals. "An internship is also a significant avenue for students to obtain permanent jobs," according to Dr. Louis Dawkins, Director of the Adkerson School of Accountancy. "It is not unusual for students to get offers and, in some cases, signing bonuses at the conclusion of their internship." Students should expect to interview for their internship early in the fall semester of their senior year. For further information about the internship program, contact Dr. Clyde Herring.
