ACADEMIC OPERATING POLICY
AND PROCEDURE
COBI-AOP
Number: 20.75
SUBJECT: Admission
Standards for Ph.D. Program
DATE: February 23, 2001
DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
To be admitted to the Ph.D.
program, applicants should have a QPA of approximately 3.0 or higher for the
last 60 hours of undergraduate work, a QPA of 3.0 or higher on any graduate
work, and a GMAT score in the range of
550 or better from a test administered within the last five years. In addition to QPA and GMAT requirements,
students must be recommended for admission by the appropriate department's
faculty based on letters of recommendation, student's statement of purpose,
academic and work experience, and writing skills. International students must have a TOEFL score of 575 or higher
or a degree from a U.S. institution of higher learning. The director of Graduate Studies in Business
will have discretion to make exceptions to these requirements should an
applicant be deficient in one of the quantitative specifications. Factors such as the quality of previous
academic studies, and prior professional and employment experience may be
considered in this decision.
DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS FOR CHANGING POLICY:
Majority vote by the College
of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
DESCRIPTION OF RELATED PROCEDURE:
The Graduate School will
calculate each applicant’s QPA over their last 60 undergraduate hours and any
graduate work and post it on the screening form prior to its being sent to the
Office of Graduate Studies in Business where the applicant’s GMAT score report
will be attached to the application.
Each student's application will be sent to the graduate coordinator in
the department in which the student desires to major for faculty review. The
department’s graduate faculty will review the application, indicate their
recommendation (with comments) to admit or reject the applicant, and return it
to the director of Graduate Studies in Business for a final admission
decision.
An applicant whose quantitative credentials meet the stated criteria above may still be denied admission. Included in the qualitative consideration are such factors as the quality of previous academic studies, the meshing of the purpose of study and the opportunities in the proposed field of study, prior professional and employment activities, and a recommendation of the faculty in the proposed

by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with
