SUBJECT:     Admission Standards for Ph.D. Program

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:

To be admitted to the Ph.D. program, applicants should have a QPA of approximately 3.0 or higher for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work, a QPA of 3.0 or higher on any graduate work, and a GMAT score in the range of  550 or better from a test administered within the last five years.  In addition to QPA and GMAT requirements, students must be recommended for admission by the appropriate department's faculty based on letters of recommendation, student's statement of purpose, academic and work experience, and writing skills.  International students must have a TOEFL score of 575 or higher or a degree from a U.S. institution of higher learning.  The director of Graduate Studies in Business will have discretion to make exceptions to these requirements should an applicant be deficient in one of the quantitative specifications.  Factors such as the quality of previous academic studies, and prior professional and employment experience may be considered in this decision.

 

DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS FOR CHANGING POLICY:

Majority vote by the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.

 

DESCRIPTION OF RELATED PROCEDURE:

The Graduate School will calculate each applicant’s QPA over their last 60 undergraduate hours and any graduate work and post it on the screening form prior to its being sent to the Office of Graduate Studies in Business where the applicant’s GMAT score report will be attached to the application.  Each student's application will be sent to the graduate coordinator in the department in which the student desires to major for faculty review. The department’s graduate faculty will review the application, indicate their recommendation (with comments) to admit or reject the applicant, and return it to the director of Graduate Studies in Business for a final admission decision. 

 

An applicant whose quantitative credentials meet the stated criteria above may still be denied admission.  Included in the qualitative consideration are such factors as the quality of previous academic studies, the meshing of the purpose of study and the opportunities in the proposed field of study, prior professional and employment activities, and a recommendation of the faculty in the proposed

field of study, including the availability of faculty support for research.  Enrollment in the Ph.D. program is limited to the number of openings available for each academic year.

REVIEW OF POLICY/PROCEDURE:

This COBI-AOP will be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
