SUBJECT: Support Area or Optional Minor Requirement
of the Ph.D. Program

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
Students in the Ph.D.
program are to declare a support area and/or an optional minor. The support
area consists of at least 9 hours of coursework chosen to support students’
study of the major field. The courses
can be chosen from one or several disciplines, but no more than six of these
hours may be taken outside the College of Business and Industry. A substitute minor in a business discipline
may be taken in lieu of the support area.
The fields available for this minor are: Accounting; Business Information Systems; Economics; Finance;
Management; and Marketing. An optional
minor in any discipline (either inside or outside the College of Business) may
also be taken in addition to the support area. The minimum course work requirement for a minor in the Ph.D.
program is twelve (12) graduate credit hours per minor.

FOR CHANGING POLICY:
Majority vote by the College
of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
DESCRIPTION OF RELATED
PROCEDURE:
Support areas and minors, either inside or outside the College
of Business and Industry, may be selected at the option of the student upon
approval of the student’s Graduate Program Committee. Students who take a support area are not required to take a preliminary
(written) exam in that area. Minors in
the College of Business are required to take a four-hour preliminary (written)
exam.
REVIEW OF
POLICY/PROCEDURE:
This COBI-AOP will be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
