SUBJECT: Academic
Area Statements on Preliminary (Written) Examinations
DATE: May 4, 2000
DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
A policy statement is to be
developed by each academic area concerning Ph.D. preliminary examinations. Such a statement should cover (i) academic
area expectations as to areas of competency for major and minor examinations
and (ii) specific procedures for making up and grading both examinations (major
and minor). Academic areas are to
ensure that preliminary examination questions are correlated to subject matter
covered by course work. Any
broad-sweeping changes in the Ph.D. major or minor field course work should be
reflected in optional questions on the preliminary examination to reflect the
old and the new curriculum for two (2) years.
Each academic area is to submit its statement to the Director of
Graduate Studies for inclusion in a composite statement, by academic area, to
be made available both to Ph.D. students and members of the Graduate
Faculty. Written guidelines concerning
preliminary examinations should be kept current.
