SUBJECT:     Use of Computers on Qualifying and Preliminary Exams

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:

Students are allowed to use a computer solely as a word processor in taking the Qualifying and Preliminary Examination in areas within the College of Business and Industry.  The type of computer is restricted to that supported by the College of Business and Industry.  Beyond the basic operating system, the only software allowed is the word processing package supported by the College of Business and Industry.  Furthermore, the area in which the examination is given may restrict access to certain aspects of the word processing software package.  The student must submit a computer usage request to the unit administering the examination no later than four weeks prior to the examination.  Furthermore, the student assumes fully the responsibility and consequences of any mechanical or electrical failure or malfunction encountered in using the computer.

 

DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS FOR CHANGING POLICY:

Majority vote by the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.

                       

DESCRIPTION OF RELATED PROCEDURE:

The hardware and software, including blank diskettes at the student’s expense, are to be supplied by the College of Business and Industry through the College’s computer support personnel in coordination with the area in which the examination is given.  The student is encouraged to make periodic backups of the text to be printed.  The printing of the student’s responses to the examination is to be handled by the academic unit housing the area in which the examination is administered.  Any hand written materials the student wishes to include with the examination must be clearly labeled and the points of insertion clearly marked in the computer files containing the text to be generated.

 

REVIEW OF POLICY/PROCEDURE:

This COBI-AOP will be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
