ACADEMIC OPERATING POLICY AND PROCEDURE

COBI-AOP NUMBER:          24.52

SUBJECT:     Retake Standards for Preliminary (Written) Examination

DATE:                        May 8, 2006

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:

Any student who fails a preliminary (written) examination may retake the examination two times.  A retake may involve sitting again for the entire written exam, or retaking only a specific part or parts of the exam.  Any full retake must occur within the next two examination offerings.  Any partial retake, if allowed, must be scheduled according to departmental guidelines. Three failures of a given preliminary (written) examination result in automatic termination of the student’s program.  Each retake, whether partial or complete, counts as one of the three allowed attempts.

DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS FOR CHANGING POLICY:

Majority vote by the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.

DESCRIPTION OF RELATED PROCEDURE:

Should a student fail the written (preliminary) examination, the faculty grading committee in that  discipline will inform the Director of Graduate Studies in whether he or she is required to retake the entire exam or to retake only a specific part or parts of the exam.  The Director will then notify the students.  If the student does not register to retake the examination according to the time schedule referred to above, he or she may be viewed as making unsatisfactory progress towards the degree.  Extenuating circumstances may be cause for being excused beyond this time period.  The student may apply to be excused to the Director of Graduate Studies in Business in writing.  The acceptability of the excuse will be determined by the Director of Graduate Studies in Business.

REVIEW OF POLICY/PROCEDURE:

This COBI-AOP will be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
