SUBJECT: Retake Standards for
Preliminary (Written) Examination

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
Any student who fails a
preliminary (written) examination may retake the examination two times. A retake may involve sitting again for the
entire written exam, or retaking only a specific part or parts of the exam. Any full retake must occur within the next
two examination offerings. Any partial retake, if allowed, must be
scheduled according to departmental guidelines. Three failures of a given
preliminary (written) examination result in automatic termination of the
student’s program. Each retake, whether partial
or complete, counts as one of the three allowed attempts.

Should a student fail the written
(preliminary) examination, the faculty grading committee in that discipline will inform the Director of
Graduate Studies in whether he or she is required to retake the entire exam or
to retake only a specific part or parts of the exam. The Director will then notify the
students. If the student does not
register to retake the examination according to the time schedule referred to
above, he or she may be viewed as making unsatisfactory progress towards the degree.
Extenuating circumstances may be cause for being excused beyond this time
period. The student may apply to be excused to the Director of Graduate
Studies in Business in writing. The acceptability of the excuse will be
determined by the Director of Graduate Studies in Business.
REVIEW OF POLICY/PROCEDURE:
This COBI-AOP will
be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the
request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the
