SUBJECT: Required Comprehensive (Oral) Examination

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
All doctoral students are required to pass a comprehensive (oral) examination in order to gain admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree. The student’s Graduate Program committee will determine what form the exam will take. In order to register for the oral exam, the student must have successfully passed the written (preliminary) exam and must be within 6 hours of completing all coursework.

DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS FOR CHANGING POLICY:
The above policy is that of the MSU Office of Graduate Studies and is subject to change by appropriate action of the Graduate Council. Only the college specific aspects are subject to majority vote of the College of Business & Industry Graduate Faculty.

DESCRIPTION OF RELATED PROCEDURE:
The Comprehensive Examination is an oral administered by the student’s Graduate Program Committee plus other invited faculty. After grading the written (preliminary) exam and assigning a passing grade, the student’s program committee will determine the form that such an exam will take. Options include the following: a) Traditional Oral Comprehensive exam covering the entire program of study; b) Dissertation Pre-Proposal presentation; or c) Formal dissertation proposal defense. Each of these is preferably to be scheduled within 3 months after notification of the results of the written exam.

REVIEW OF POLICY/PROCEDURE:
This COBI-AOP will be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
