SUBJECT: Appeal
of Graduate Student’s Academic Standing
DATE: May 4, 2000
DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:
To appeal one’s academic
status, e.g. termination from a program, a student must present the request and
related explanation in writing to the Director of Graduate Studies. The Director will review this appeal with
the appropriate committee and render a recommendation to the Dean of the
College of Business and Industry.
If the appeal to the
Director of Graduate Studies is unsuccessful, the student may then appeal to
the Dean of the College of Business and Industry. In making a decision, the Dean will consult with an appointed
subcommittee of the Graduate Council.
If this appeal is unsuccessful, the student may then appeal to the Vice
President of Academic Affairs.
DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS
FOR CHANGING POLICY:
The above policy is that of
the MSU Office of Graduate Studies and is subject to change by appropriate
action of the Graduate Council. Only
the College specific aspects are subject to majority vote of the College of
Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
DESCRIPTION OF RELATED
PROCEDURE:
In rendering a recommendation,
the Director will first consult with the student’s Graduate Committee. Should a minor area of the student’s program
be directly involved in the petition, the members of the Graduate Committee
from that area will represent the faculty from the minor area. Given a unanimous recommendation by the
Director and all members of the student’s Graduate Committee, the
recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of the College of Business &
Industry. In the absence of such
unanimity, the Director of Graduate Studies will present the petition to the
Dean’s Council before making a recommendation to the Dean of the Graduate
School.
REVIEW OF
POLICY/PROCEDURE:
This COBI-AOP will be reviewed at least every five years by the Graduate Policies Committee at the request of the Graduate Director with request for revision presented to the College of Business and Industry Graduate Faculty.
