I
want an MBA but I didn't get my undergraduate degree in
business and I haven't fulfilled all of the prerequisites.
What classes will I need?
If your undergraduate degree is not in business,
then you will need to complete a set of undergraduate pre-requisite
courses, or graduate level foundation
courses in order to earn your MBA. These same
foundation courses also apply to the MSIS degree, and the
MSBA degree in finance. They include courses in accounting,
business information systems, economics, finance, management,
marketing, and statistics. They may be taken prior
to entering the program or after admission. However,
the appropriate pre-requisite course must always be completed
before the corresponding core course is taken. Our
graduate level foundation courses are all offered online
for your convenience.
How
long will it take me to complete my MBA degree once I have
all the prerequisites?
Candidates
for the MBA program must complete 30 hours of course work
at the graduate level, including a core of 27 hours in the
areas of accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing,
and statistics, plus a capstone field study course. The
remaining 3 hours of graduate courses are elective and may
be selected from either within or outside of business.
Full-time
students with an undergraduate business degree can complete
the MBA program in three semesters or one year, and part-time
students with an undergraduate business degree can complete
the program in approximately two years, depending on the
number of courses they choose to take each semester. In
the absence of previous academic training in business, full-time
students can complete the program within two years, and
part-time students can usually complete the program within
three or four. The maximum time frame within which the degree
may be completed is six years.
Will
I be able to get an assistantship?
A number of assistantships are awarded to
students working toward their master's and doctoral degrees.
These awards include a monthly stipend and tuition waivers.
They are assigned competitively based on each
student’s GMAT and GPA scores, with consideration of the
student's skills and the needs of the College. Students
must be enrolled full-time to be eligible for an assistantship.
What
do graduate assistants do?
Graduate assistants work 20 hours a week
in the College of Business and Industry. If you get
an assistantship as a master’s student, you might be assigned
to work with a professor to help with teaching or research,
or you might work in an administrative unit.
After
I graduate will I be able to find a job?
Assisting its graduates in finding jobs is
a primary concern of Mississippi State University. In order
to give you the best possible opportunities, the University
operates the Career Services Center and the Cooperative
Education Program.
The
Career Center (CC) brings approximately 385 businesses to
campus each semester to interview students for full-time
jobs and professional-level summer employment. In preparation
for these interviews, the CC offers resume critiques and
seminars that focus on writing effective resumes, honing
interviewing skills, and looking for jobs.
The
CC also maintains an alumni career network and critiques
videotaped mock interviews. In addition, the CC sponsors
Career Day, a program that brings more than 150 businesses
to campus each fall and spring to let students make future
job contacts and gain more information on potential career
paths.
When
is my application due?
To
ensure full consideration for admission to any of our master’s
programs, all application materials must be received according
to the following deadlines: fall semester, July 1; spring
semester, November 1; first summer term, April 1; and second
summer term, May 1.
Can
I substitute the GRE for the GMAT?
At
the present time, we accept only the GMAT for all of our
master’s degree except one. The M.A. in Economics requires
the GRE. We do not accept substitutes for these exams.
As
an international student, can I waive the TOEFL?
We require a TOEFL score for all international
students unless you have graduated from a college or university
in the U.S., or you come from a country where English is
the first language.
Are
interviews required during the admission process?
Interviews are not required for master’s
students but we would love to meet you and to discuss our
programs with you. If you would like to come visit, contact
the GSB office at 662-325-1891.
