Doctoral Student Annual Review

Doctoral Student Annual Review Form

1. By April 15 of each year, the doctoral student completes the annual review form and submits it electronically to the doctoral coordinator for his/her discipline. The information provided on the report should relate to the previous calender year - spring, summer, and fall semesters.

2. The doctoral coordinator immediately provides copies or fowards the report electronically of the student’s completed self-evaluation to all doctoral faculty in the discipline.

3. The doctoral faculty in the student’s discipline reviews the student’s form and any other appropriate information about the student’s performance during the academic year.

4. The doctoral faculty in the discipline provide performance feedback on the doctoral student to the doctoral program coordinator within four weeks of receiving the doctoral student’s annual review form. Each discipline may decide the appropriate means by which this performance feedback will be provided to the doctoral coordinator.

5. The doctoral coordinator compiles an overall written evaluation of the student’s performance in the classroom, in research, and as a graduate assistant. The narrative should contain feedback on the student’s performance in the classroom, in research, and as a graduate assistant. The narrative should contain a review of the student’s performance strengths and weaknesses, as well as recommendations for improvement. This narrative should be approved (by vote or consensus) by the doctoral faculty in the discipline.

6. Within six weeks of the student’s submission of the annual review form, the doctoral coordinator in the discipline schedules a feedback session with the doctoral student, in which the doctoral faculty’s appraisal of the student’s performance is discussed.

7. Within eight weeks of the student’s submission of the annual review form, the student receives a written copy of the narrative performance appraisal and a copy will be submitted to the Graduate Studies in Business office to be placed in his/her file.

8. Although the primary purpose of the annual review is to provide formal, regular feedback to doctoral students on their performance in ALL aspects of their doctoral student role, in cases of extreme or repeated unsatisfactory performance, the doctoral faculty may utilize the annual review to recommend a range of actions to the graduate director, including but not limited to suspension of the student, removal of the student’s assistantship, and/or termination of the student’s program.
