GTHRA Scholarship Winners Announced

State of Mississippi SHRM Conference 2001

The 2001State Conference was a rousing success with great exhibitors, quality sessions, the Majesty of Spain exhibit and excellent networking opportunities.  Eleven GTHRA members attended along with 7 members of the student group.  The GTHRA attendees also won a number of door prizes, with Dr. Allison Pearson taking the top prize...a weekend for two at the Beau Rivage Resort in Biloxi.

MARCH 2001 News

Mark Smith named to Top 40-Under 40

Columbus businessman and GTHRA member Mark Smith  is being recognized as being among Mississippi's "best and brightest" leaders.  Mississippi Business Journal says, "the people selected as Top 40 winners are leaders in their fields, having won the respect of their peers and haven't forgotten the importance of giving back to their communities."  Click here for more information.

SHRM Leadership Conference
Danny Avery, Dewayne Stevens, and Matthew Stollak attended the SHRM Leadership Conference in Alexandria, VA, Nov. 16-18.  Tribute was paid to outgoing President Michael Losey.

TAYLOR SMITH SPEAKS

Taylor Smith, Atty., provided an interesting overview of recent changes in employment law at our October meeting.


SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED                       

(from left): Russell Young, Trip Ray, and Ann Havard stand with Judy Cascio and Danny Avery.  Russell was awarded a $300 scholarship, and Trip and Ann were each awarded $150.  All three students are active members of the student SHRM chapter at Mississippi State University.

Suzanne Ulmer presented a detailed discussion of the efforts of the School-to-Work initiative.  We thank her for her time and efforts.

AUGUST 2000 News

Bert Guy, Atty. at Tanner & Guin,  provided an exciting and informative presentation to 25 members regarding workplace violence.  For those who unfortunately missed it, you can access his Powerpoint slides by clicking here.  We thank him for his presentation.

July 2000 Meeting

Sam Whitehead, facility manager of Allied Enterprises, provided GTHRA with some excellent background on the efforts of his organization and the Department of Rehabilitation Services.  We thank him for his presentation.

Steve Tracey Leaves Presidency; Judy Cascio to guide GTHRA into 2001

President Steve Tracey has decided to take a position in Conyers Georgia.  As a result, Judy Cascio will take over as interim President before she assumes the role permanently in 2001.  We wish Steve great success in his position and thank him for all his efforts.

Danny Avery passes SPHR Exam!!

Congrats go out to our own Danny Avery who passed the SPHR exam in May!!

GTHRA EARNS 1999 MERIT AWARD

STUDENT CHAPTER WINS SUPERIOR MERIT AWARD

FROM STUDENT PROGRAMS MANAGER BETH MCFARLAND:

"Congratulations! The Mississippi State University student chapter of SHRM has earned the SUPERIOR Merit Award for the 1999-2000 school year, with a total of 1930 points. Your entire chapter should be very proud of this accomplishment. The ten chapters earning 2970 points or more will be recognized as the 1999-2000 Top Ten Student Chapters at the SHRM national conference."

"Out of the 360 active student chapters, 102 chapters submitted applications. Seventy-six chapters earned the Superior Merit Award, and fifteen chapters achieved Merit Award status. It was another excellent year for our student chapters! A complete list of Merit Award winners and Top Ten chapters will be posted on out student web page (www.shrm.org/students/) within the next week. Your award plaque will be sent to your chapter advisor by mid-June."
